Cabernet Franc from the Venje site in the Kutjevo hills, fermented with native yeasts in open vats, the cap worked by hand in the old way, and aged in wooden barrels. The Sontacchi family uses no systemic sprays, insecticides, herbicides or mineral fertilisers in the vineyard.

The Sontacchis came to Kutjevo from Trento about 130 years ago, and Tomaso Sontacchi began in 1900 as vineyard manager of the Turković estate. Five generations later the winery sits in the centre of Kutjevo on Graševina square, in a converted brick stable, with a tasting room and bistro. Brothers Antun and Krunoslav are the fifth generation.

Deep ruby garnet, with black berry fruit, dark cherries and a nuance of tobacco. The palate is juicy and elegant, with integrated acidity, a little tannin on the finish and the spicy character that makes it a good companion to food. Falstaff has rated it 91 points.

Serve at 16 degrees with roast poultry, pork chops, mushroom dishes or a plate of kulen.
