Crushing garlic, peppercorns or fresh herbs in a wooden mortar sends their scent straight into the kitchen, and olive wood brings its own warm, streaked grain to the table.

This mortar and pestle comes from Oliva, a family workshop that began in 2000 making crosses and devotional souvenirs and, from around 2005, turned to olive wood pieces for homes and restaurants. Each one is made from a single piece of wood, so no two are quite alike and the dimensions vary slightly.

The workshop sands and polishes every piece and protects it with natural olive or linseed oil, which gives the wood its soft sheen.

Use it for pesto, spice rubs or garlic crushed with salt, and rub it with a little olive oil once a year to bring back its colour and shine. It makes a lasting gift for anyone who loves to cook.

Oliva is a Croatian family workshop (obrt za izradu suvenira) making products and souvenirs from olive wood. Production began in 2000 with crosses and devotional souvenirs and around 2005 grew into household and restaurant items, souvenirs and business gifts, finished by sanding, polishing and oiling with natural olive or linseed oil. In early 2020 the workshop exhibited at Green Week in Berlin through the Croatian Chamber of Economy, and it has taken part in the Olive Festival in Zagreb since it began in 2015.
