A dry Istrian Malvazija, crisp and lively, with the salty freshness the grape takes on close to the sea.
Coronica is a family winery near Umag, at the western edge of Istria, where the family has made wine for four generations. Moreno Coronica set up the estate in 1992, and most of the vines grow in the red terra rossa soil a short way from the Adriatic.
It smells of citrus, pear and white flowers, with a fine saline note underneath. The palate is fresh and balanced, closing on a long, clean finish.
Serve it well chilled with seafood, white fish, or a plate of Istrian cheese and prosciutto. A bottle also makes an easy gift for someone who likes a crisp white.
