A Chardonnay made in the Burgundy manner, with a good body and a creamy texture that carries a long, mineral finish. The oak sits quietly underneath, more a frame than a flavour.
Bastiàn is a young winery in Buje, in the hills of western Istria, started in 2021 by Petra and Ivan Leko. Their vines grow on the pale white soil the area is known for. The wine takes its name, Marchiori, from Giovanni Marchiori, the Venetian sculptor who carved the statue of Saint Servulus for the church in Buje.
The grapes come from the Cupiga vineyard, picked in two passes, one early for freshness and one later for depth, then fermented and aged in wood.
Serve it with seafood and fish, or with veal. It also makes a considered gift for someone who likes a barrel-aged white.
