Marastina was in the past sold in pharmacies. It was literally prescribed by doctors as a medicine. It was also an official sacramental wine of the Sibenik region. 24 hour skin contact and aging on fine lees in neutral Slavonian oak barrels give this wine complexity, fuller body and typical Mediterranean character while it retains its distinctive freshness and minerality.
In the past, Marastina was traditionally aged for over 20 years. It’s like a medicine.
This variety, also called rukatac or krizol, can be a great everyday wine and represent a kind of Dalmatian version of Graševina, but it can also be much more than that.
Although the Maraschino variety is a fairly unknown variety to the general public outside of wine circles, in reality it was until recently the most widespread and most represented white variety in Dalmatia.
